what does travelling mean in basketball

In basketball, “travelling” is a violation that occurs when a player holding the ball moves one or both of their feet illegally. This typically happens when a player takes too many steps without dribbling the ball.
Here are the main situations where travelling can be called:
1. Taking too many steps: A player is allowed to take two steps after they stop dribbling, but if they take more than two, it is considered travelling.

2. Pivot foot violation: When a player stops dribbling and establishes a “pivot foot,” they must keep that foot planted while the other foot can move. If they lift or drag the pivot foot before passing, shooting, or dribbling again, it results in a travelling violation.
3. Moving the ball without dribbling: A player must either pass or shoot after taking two steps. If they walk or run without dribbling, it’s a travelling violation.
The travelling rule is designed to ensure that players don’t gain an unfair advantage by moving too many steps with the ball without dribbling. If a travelling violation is called, the opposing team is awarded possession of the ball.
