what is an and 1 in basketball
In basketball, an “and-1” refers to a situation where a player is fouled while making a shot, and the shot goes in successfully. After the basket is made, the player is awarded one additional free throw attempt. If the player makes the free throw, they complete the “and-1” play by scoring an extra point on top of the initial basket.
For example, if a player is fouled while scoring a two-point shot, they would be given one free throw. If they make that free throw, they score a total of three points for the play — the two points for the basket and one more from the free throw. The term “and-1” highlights both the made shot and the subsequent free throw opportunity.
