How to Do CPR on an Adult: A Step-by-Step Guide

In emergency situations where an adult is unresponsive and not breathing, performing CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) can be a life-saving measure. Knowing how to do CPR on an adult is crucial for anyone who might find themselves in such a situation. This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to perform CPR on an adult, ensuring you are prepared to act quickly and effectively.

1. Assess the Situation

Before starting CPR, it is essential to assess the situation to ensure your safety. Make sure the area is safe, and there are no hazards that could cause harm to you or the victim. If there are other people present, ask someone to call emergency services immediately.

2. Check Responsiveness

Approach the victim and tap their shoulders gently to check for responsiveness. Shout loudly to see if they respond. If the victim does not respond and is not breathing normally, proceed with CPR.

3. Call for Help

If you are alone, call emergency services while performing CPR. If someone else is present, have them call for help immediately.

4. Open the Airway

Place one hand on the victim’s forehead and the other on the chin. Gently tilt the head back and lift the chin to open the airway. This helps to ensure that the airway is clear for chest compressions.

5. Check for Breathing

Look, listen, and feel for any signs of breathing. Place your ear close to the victim’s mouth and nose, listen for breath sounds, and feel for any air movement on your cheek. If the victim is not breathing, proceed with chest compressions.

6. Start Chest Compressions

Place the heel of one hand on the center of the victim’s chest, just above the nipple line. Place your other hand on top of the first hand and interlock your fingers. Keep your elbows straight and use your body weight to perform compressions at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute.

7. Give Rescue Breaths

After 30 compressions, give two rescue breaths. Pinch the nose shut, make a complete seal over the mouth, and blow into the victim’s mouth for about one second. Allow the chest to rise completely between breaths.

8. Continue CPR

Keep performing chest compressions and rescue breaths in a cycle of 30 compressions to 2 breaths until emergency medical personnel arrive or the victim starts breathing on their own.

9. Remember the ABCs of CPR

The ABCs of CPR stand for Airway, Breathing, and Circulation. Always remember to check for responsiveness (A), open the airway (B), and check for breathing (C) before starting chest compressions.

10. Seek Further Training

While this guide provides a basic understanding of how to perform CPR on an adult, it is essential to receive proper training and certification. Consider taking a CPR course to learn more advanced techniques and to stay updated on the latest guidelines.

By knowing how to do CPR on an adult, you can be prepared to save a life in critical situations. Always remember to stay calm, follow these steps, and seek further training to enhance your skills.
