Whether you’re looking to add a burst of tartness to your salads, boost the flavor of your oatmeal, or simply snack on them as a healthy alternative to candy, making your own dried cranberries is a simple and rewarding process. In this article, we will guide you through the steps to make delicious dried cranberries at home.

Ingredients

To make dried cranberries, you will need the following ingredients:

– Fresh cranberries: 1 pound (450 grams)
– Sugar: 1 cup (200 grams)
– Water: 2 cups (475 ml)

Equipment

In addition to the ingredients, you will need the following equipment:

– A large pot
– A saucepan
– A candy thermometer
– A baking sheet lined with parchment paper
– A food dehydrator (optional)

Instructions

1. Begin by washing the fresh cranberries thoroughly under cold running water. Remove any damaged or moldy berries and discard them.

2. In a large pot, combine the cranberries and sugar. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved completely. This should take about 5-7 minutes.

3. Once the sugar has dissolved, bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low and continue to cook for another 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. The mixture should become thick and syrupy.

4. While the cranberries are cooking, prepare your baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper. This will help the cranberries dry properly and prevent sticking.

5. When the cranberries have reached a temperature of 220°F (104°C) on the candy thermometer, remove the pot from the heat. Pour the mixture onto the prepared baking sheet, spreading it out evenly.

6. If you have a food dehydrator, you can place the baking sheet inside and set the temperature to 140°F (60°C). Allow the cranberries to dry for approximately 6-8 hours, or until they are completely dry and no longer sticky.

7. If you do not have a food dehydrator, you can place the baking sheet in an oven preheated to 140°F (60°C). Bake the cranberries for 6-8 hours, or until they are dry and no longer sticky.

8. Once the cranberries are dry, remove them from the oven or dehydrator and allow them to cool completely on the baking sheet.

9. Once cooled, store the dried cranberries in an airtight container. They can be kept at room temperature for up to 2 weeks or in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.

Now you have your very own homemade dried cranberries, ready to be enjoyed in a variety of recipes or simply as a healthy snack. Happy cooking!
