what does and one mean in basketball

In basketball, the term “and one” refers to a situation where a player is fouled while successfully making a shot, usually a field goal (two-point or three-point shot). After the shot is made, the player is awarded one additional free throw attempt. If they make the free throw, it counts as a complete “and one” play, with the player scoring the points from the original shot plus the points from the free throw.
For example, if a player is fouled while making a layup, and the shot goes in, they would then take one free throw. If they make the free throw, it’s considered a successful “and one” play, adding the points from the layup (2 points) and the free throw (1 point), for a total of 3 points on that play.
