How to Install Toilet Guts: A Step-by-Step Guide

Installing toilet guts is a task that most homeowners will eventually need to undertake. Whether it’s due to a clog, a leak, or simply because your toilet is outdated, understanding how to replace the inner workings of a toilet can save you time and money. In this article, we’ll walk you through the process of installing toilet guts, ensuring that you can handle this task with confidence.

Before You Begin

Before diving into the installation process, it’s important to gather all the necessary tools and materials. You’ll need a new toilet tank, a new toilet bowl, replacement wax ring, a screwdriver, a hammer, a putty knife, and plumber’s grease. Additionally, make sure you have a bucket or other container to collect any water that may spill during the process.

Step 1: Remove the Old Toilet Tank

Start by turning off the water supply to the toilet. Next, remove the tank lid and flush the toilet to empty the tank. With the tank empty, disconnect the water supply line using a adjustable wrench. Once the line is loose, remove it from the tank and set it aside. Now, unscrew the bolts that secure the tank to the bowl, and carefully lift the tank off the bowl.

Step 2: Remove the Old Toilet Bowl

With the tank removed, you can now focus on the bowl. Unscrew the bolts that hold the bowl to the floor, and use a hammer and putty knife to remove the old wax ring. Be sure to clean the bottom of the bowl where the wax ring sits to ensure a proper seal with the new ring.

Step 3: Install the New Wax Ring

Take your new wax ring and place it on the bottom of the bowl. Ensure that it is centered and smooth. Now, position the bowl on top of the wax ring, and gently tap it into place using a hammer and putty knife. Reattach the bolts, making sure to tighten them evenly.

Step 4: Install the New Toilet Tank

Place the new tank on top of the bowl, aligning the bolts with the holes on the bowl. Apply plumber’s grease to the threads of the bolts, and tighten them securely. Reattach the water supply line to the tank using an adjustable wrench, ensuring a tight fit.

Step 5: Reattach the Tank Lid and Check for Leaks

Replace the tank lid, and turn the water supply back on. Allow the tank to fill, and check for any leaks around the tank and the water supply line. If you notice any leaks, tighten the connections and check again.

Step 6: Test the Toilet

Once you’ve confirmed that there are no leaks, it’s time to test the toilet. Flush the toilet several times to ensure that it is working properly. If everything is functioning as expected, you’ve successfully installed the toilet guts!

By following these steps, you can confidently install toilet guts and save yourself the cost of hiring a professional plumber. Always remember to take your time and double-check your work to ensure a successful installation.
