Step-by-Step Guide to Installing Engineered Hardwood Floors Over Concrete Subfloors

How to Install Engineered Hardwood on Concrete

Installing engineered hardwood on concrete can be a rewarding DIY project that adds both beauty and value to your home. Engineered hardwood is a versatile flooring option that is suitable for various environments, including those with concrete subfloors. In this article, we will guide you through the process of installing engineered hardwood on concrete, ensuring a successful and long-lasting flooring solution.

1. Prepare the Subfloor

Before you begin installing the engineered hardwood, it is crucial to prepare the concrete subfloor. Ensure that the concrete is clean, dry, and level. Any cracks, holes, or uneven areas should be repaired and filled with a concrete leveling compound. Allow the compound to dry completely before proceeding.

2. Install a Subfloor

In some cases, it may be necessary to install a subfloor over the concrete to provide a stable and even surface for the engineered hardwood. Plywood or OSB (oriented strand board) are commonly used as subfloors. The subfloor should be laid perpendicular to the direction of the hardwood planks, with a gap of at least 1/4 inch between the panels to allow for expansion and contraction.

3. Allow the Subfloor to Acclimate

Engineered hardwood is sensitive to moisture, so it is essential to allow the subfloor to acclimate to the room’s temperature and humidity. Open the boxes of hardwood and let them sit in the room for at least 48 hours before installation. This process ensures that the hardwood will expand and contract with the room’s conditions, reducing the risk of warping or cracking.

4. Plan the Layout

Before starting the installation, plan the layout of the engineered hardwood. Begin by determining the direction of the planks and the starting point. It is generally recommended to start in a corner and work your way across the room. Ensure that the planks are staggered by at least 6 inches from the previous row to minimize the appearance of seams.

5. Install the Engineered Hardwood

Now that you have prepared the subfloor and planned the layout, it’s time to install the engineered hardwood. Begin by laying the first row of planks, ensuring that the tongue is facing the direction of the room. Use a tapping block to gently tap the planks into place, ensuring a snug fit. Continue laying the planks in the same manner, using spacers to maintain the necessary gaps between the planks.

6. Install the Last Row

When you reach the last row, you may need to cut the planks to fit. Measure and mark the plank, then use a saw to cut it to the appropriate length. Ensure that the cut edge is flush with the wall or the previous row of planks. Install the cut plank in place, using the tapping block to secure it.

7. Finish the Installation

Once all the planks are installed, inspect the floor for any gaps, unevenness, or other issues. Make any necessary adjustments, such as tapping down any loose planks or adjusting the spacers. Finally, remove the spacers and install transition strips at the doorways and along the walls to complete the installation.

By following these steps, you can successfully install engineered hardwood on concrete, creating a beautiful and durable flooring solution for your home. Remember to take your time and pay attention to detail to ensure a long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing result.
