Step-by-Step Guide- Properly Placing AED Pads on an Adult for Effective CPR Assistance

How to Place AED Pads on an Adult

In emergency situations where a person is experiencing cardiac arrest, using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can be a lifesaving measure. One of the most critical steps in using an AED is correctly placing the AED pads on the adult patient. This article will guide you through the process of how to place AED pads on an adult to ensure the device can deliver an effective shock if needed.

Step 1: Uncover the AED

First, uncover the AED and ensure it is turned on. The AED will provide verbal instructions throughout the process, so it is essential to follow them closely.

Step 2: Remove the AED pads from their packaging

Take the AED pads out of their packaging and ensure they are not expired. The pads are designed to be disposable and should only be used once.

Step 3: Peel off the protective covers

Peel off the clear plastic protective covers from the AED pads. Be careful not to touch the sticky side of the pads with your fingers, as this can reduce their effectiveness.

Step 4: Open the patient’s clothing

Position the patient on their back on a hard, flat surface. Open the patient’s clothing to expose the chest area, ensuring that there is no clothing or other objects between the AED pads and the skin.

Step 5: Attach the AED pads to the patient’s chest

Follow the AED’s instructions to attach the pads to the patient’s chest. Place one pad on the right side of the chest above the armpit and the other pad on the left side of the chest below the nipple. The pads should be placed in a position that ensures they will not move during the shock delivery.

Step 6: Ensure the pads are secure and the patient is ready

Check that the AED pads are firmly attached to the patient’s chest and that there is no clothing or other objects between them. Make sure the patient is still unconscious and not breathing, as the AED will analyze the heart rhythm and determine if a shock is necessary.

Step 7: Allow the AED to analyze the heart rhythm

Follow the AED’s instructions to allow it to analyze the heart rhythm. The AED will either prompt you to deliver a shock or advise you to continue CPR.

Step 8: Deliver the shock if needed

If the AED indicates that a shock is needed, press the shock button and stand clear of the patient. The AED will deliver the shock automatically. After the shock, the AED will analyze the heart rhythm again and provide further instructions.

By following these steps, you can ensure that you are placing AED pads on an adult correctly. Remember that time is critical in cardiac arrest situations, so act quickly and follow the AED’s instructions to maximize the chances of saving a life.
